Australia’s top scientific advisors could push for a second round of COVID-19 vaccinations if the first rollout fails to control transmission.

Co-chair of the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation – Professor Allan Cheng – has told the Australian newspaper protection from the disease is the immediate aim.

But the long-term goal of herd immunity may not be achieved in the vaccine’s first phase.

He says if a large percentage of Australians are immunised this year, it would allow for an easing of restrictions.
