The production of the “world’s first” vaccine against COVID-19 started in Gamaleya Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology in Moscow on Tuesday.

The vaccine, dubbed “Sputnik V,” is due to enter civilian circulation from the beginning of 2021.

The product was registered by the Russian Health Ministry and is produced with the financial help of the Russian Direct Investment Fund.

Earlier on Tuesday, Russian Health Minister Mikhail Murashko reported to President Vladimir Putin that “the vaccine has shown its effectiveness and safety”.

Murashko also added that Russia is ready for international cooperation in the development and introduction of the vaccine.

Russia has registered the world’s fourth-highest number of confirmed COVID-19 cases, with 897,599 infections since the beginning of the epidemic.
